Bangalore okay with maternity child care leaves for women soldiers of all ranks

The Indian Army has decided to grant maternity and childcare leave to women officers of all ranks, following a similar move by the IAF and Navy.

The Army has issued an order, granting 6 months of maternity leave to women officers and 3 months of childcare leave, which can be availed till the child attains the age of 2 years.

The order, issued by the Adjutant General’s Branch, said that the maternity leave can be availed twice during the entire service. The childcare leave can be taken in two spells – one up to 1 year and the other up to 2 years of age of the child.

The Army has also clarified that grant of maternity leave will not have any adverse effect on seniority, promotion or pension of the women officers. However, they will not be entitled to any allowances during the maternity leave period.

The move comes after the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the Indian Navy had earlier granted maternity leave to women officers of all ranks.

The IAF had, in 2019, granted 6 months of maternity leave to women officers and 2 years of childcare leave, which can be availed till the child attains the age of 7 years.

The Navy had, in 2018, granted 6 months of maternity leave to women officers and 2 years of childcare leave, which can be availed till the child attains the age of 5 years.

The Army’s decision to grant maternity and childcare leave to women officers of all ranks is a welcome move and is in line with the government’s efforts to empower women in the armed forces.

The move will also help in attracting and retaining more women officers in the Army, which is facing a shortage of officers.

According to data from the Ministry of Defence, there are currently around 8,000 women officers serving in the Army, which is less than 5% of the total officer strength.

The Army has been taking a number of steps to increase the number of women officers in the force, including opening up more combat roles for them and providing them with better opportunities for career progression.

The grant of maternity and childcare leave is a further step in this direction and will help in creating a more conducive environment for women officers in the Army..
